The faculty of the UNM Mathematics and Statistics Department research areas include
- Pure Mathematics research in algebra, differential and algebraic geometry, number theory, operator theory, topological physics, and Harmonic Analysis/Fourier analysis.
- Applied Mathematics research in numerical methods, scientific computing, partial differential equations, nonlinear waves, fluid dynamics, mathematical physics, and mathematical biology.
- Statistics research in Bayesian methods with applications to biology, and other fields, including strong collaborations with the Mind Research Network (MRN) and the UNM Hospitals.

Many of our faculty are formally involved with other research units on campus. The formal affiliations, joint appointments and membership on boards, include: Departments of Biology and of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Advanced Research Computing, Mind Research Network, Nanoscience & Microsystems Engineering Program, and National Security Studies Program. The department has close connections with both Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
Our undergraduate and graduate students engage in research with our faculty and faculty from other units or the National Laboratories, through undergraduate and graduate research projects, Honor’s thesis, MS Thesis and PhD Dissertations.
Our faculty publish, often with students, in major refereed professional journals including Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS), Inventiones Mathematicae, Duke Journal of Mathematics, Annals of Mathematics (Princeton Press), Annals of the American Statistical Association (ASA), Journal of Royal Statistical Society, Biometrics, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) journals, American Mathematical Society (AMS) journals, European Mathematical Society (EMS) journals, Physics Review Letters, etc.
The faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics receives funding from a variety of agencies and organizations. Currently the faculty is working on grants funded by The National Science Foundation (NSF) including one active CAREER grant, Simons Foundation, Department of Energy (DOE), National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Institute of Health (NIH), and the University of Alaska.The funding for these grants generates almost three million in active grants. Such a broad range of agencies requires an equally broad range of talents and interests.
The faculty members are involved with grants as principal investigators and as consultants to other departments where their expertise is required to fulfill a specific need on a team of researchers. While the faculty is the primary beneficiary of the funding, their experience and contacts are invaluable to graduate and undergraduate students studying Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New Mexico.
