The first round of the 2025-2026 UNM-PNM Statewide High School Mathematics Contest, was held earlier this month on November 7-10, 2025. A total of 449 students from 35 schools participated. Although select online participation was possible, almost 97 percent of the students participated in-person at one of 17 test sites in Albuquerque, Deming, Las Cruces, Lordsburg, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and Zuni.
Almost 200 students from grades 5-12 and representing 30 schools are invited to the second round that will be held on Saturday afternoon, February 14th, 2026. There will also be a public lecture at 10:00 AM on the 14th given by Professor Elizabeth Gross, University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Our Chair said "I thank the organizers, Stephen, James and Cristina for making this happen, with a large investment of their energy and time. The reach across the state and across schools, and the increase of in-person participation since Covid is significant."
T. J. Middleton, Bosque School Upper School Math & Math Department Leader, and UNM alumni, said "We really enjoy this contest and feel lucky that NM has a math competition that values thinking and perseverance rather than memorization, shortcuts, and tricks."
Update: UNM News picked up the story on 12/15/2025.
