Title: Designing Courses and Pathways for Deeper Learning
We will look broadly at course and curriculum design rather than at a single course sequence, focusing on how courses can be intentionally designed to
support active learning, engagement, and meaningful participation. We will then widen discussion to pathway design,
including how mathematics pathways support progression across STEM disciplines and how institutions
have redesigned pathways to improve student outcomes. We will give a short framing of design principles drawn from Carnegie Math Pathways and from pathway redesign
work at other institutions, organized around the three lenses of content, pedagogy, and curriculum
and task design. Then there will be a structured discussion in which faculty look at a course they teach through those lenses and name where the design already supports deeper learning and where it could do more. Finally, we will finish with a conversation on pathway design across the department.
