History

WCOAS has been an annual tradition for 18 years. It is intended to reinforce ties among the operator algebarists in Western universities. It is typically a short conference, during the academic year. Averaged over a few years it covers topics within and adjacent to operator algebras, such as

  • Free probability and its applications
  • Subfactors and their invariants
  • Operator spaces
  • Quantum groups
  • Semigroups of endomorphisms
  • Classification of C*-algebras
  • Non-commutative geometry
  • Graph C*-algebras and their generalizations
  • Crossed-products, imprimitivity, and duality for C*-algebras
  • Von Neumann algebras
The two most recent conferences in this series were in Pachuca and Reno.

Overview

An afternoon reception on Friday, September 30th, at the Mathematics and Statistics department, will be the informal start of the conference. An after-dinner reception will be held later Friday at the Plaza Inn. The first talk will start Saturday at about 9AM. The last talk will end at about 1PM Sunday.

There will be a banquet Saturday evening at El Pinto, whose specialty is traditional New Mexican food. There will be no registration fee, but when you arrive you will need to pay $35 per person wishing to attend the banquet. Transportation will be covered by the conference.

The weather is wonderful in early October, both for people and for hot air balloons. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is starting October 1, so the skys should be filled both mornings with colorful hot air balloons.

Hotel prices go up and room availabilty goes down during the fiesta, so I have booked a block of rooms at the nearby Plaza Inn. If you plan to stay at the Plaza inn you should simply select "I wish to stay at the Plaza Inn, booking by WCOAS organizer" on the WCOAS registration page. The Plaza Inn will bill the conference directly for these rooms.

If you have not registered already, you should register as soon as possible. It is past the deadline at the hotel, but they will propably still give me a few more rooms.

If you wish to extend your stay, or arrange alternate accomodation, a good start is the Albquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau.

If you are requesting finacial support, or are a speaker, then be sure to fly on a US flag carrier. I believe that foreign participants must have a B-1 visa for getting reimbursement. I will check on this.
