Abstract

We present a first attempt at describing linear integro-differential operators in an algebraic way. We restrict ourselves to operators with constant coefficients acting on bivariate functions. The crucial idea is to express the (linear) chain rule of differentiation and the (linear) substitution rule of integration by a suitable ideal of relations in a noncommutative polynomial ring.
