Sea Ice Research

Kinematics

We have developed a new sea ice constitutive model based on an elastic-decohsive approach that explicitly accounts for leads. Kinematic tests and comparison with RGPS data have been used to validate the model.

MPM Simulations

The material-point method ( MPM ) combined with the elastic-decohesive constitutive model, has been used to study lead opening in the Arctic pack ice. The elastic-decohesive model explicitly represents leads. The figure below compares lead opening inferred from RGPS data (left) and predicted lead opening computed using MPM and the elastic-decohesive model.
