"Perspectives on integrating mathematics and software"

                            Macsyma, Inc.

I will cover two topics in my talk.

First I will briefly discuss how Macsyma Inc. combines Macsyma
(symbolic and numerical math in Lisp), Lapack (numerical linear
algebra in Fortran), PDease2D (finite element analysis in Pascal)
and a notebook interface (in C++). This package includes multi-
engine on-line help that supports several software packages in
the same user interface.

Secondly I will discuss some ideas on how to optimize intellectual
returns on investment in mathematics, using concepts from strategic
and organizational analysis. First we identify some underlying
"intellectual technologies" in mathemtics, and distinguish between
those technologies which are relatively mature and those whose basic
enabling technology is advancing very rapidly. Organizational
concepts of effectiveness and competence provide some perspectives
on the pursuit of academic excellence in mathematics. This line of
thinking suggests some strong conclusions about the relationship
between conventional computational mathematics, modern abstract
mathematics and computerized computation.
