PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS The island of Maui is centrally located with the Hawaiian chain. Its major airport at Kahului (central Maui) is a 20 minute air flight from Honolulu. It is the second largest island and encompasses 729 square miles with elevations varying from sea level to 10,023 feet (3055 meters) atop Mt. Haleakala. CLIMATE Maui's climate varies with average annual temperatures (at Kahului Airport) ranging from 72 F to 79 F (22 C to 26 C), with the lowest average of 48 F (9 C) and highest of 95 F (35 C). The average annual rainfall (at Kahului Airport and also at the Aston Wailea) is 16 inches (41 cm). December through March are usually the rainy months. At the summit of Mt. Haleakala, the temperature will drop to below freezing during the winter months and for short periods the summit is snow capped. POPULATION The island's population is approximately 103,000, expanding at a rate of 4% annually.
