Improving Math Teaching with DERIVE and the TI-92: The Scaffolding Method
B Kutzler (Lecture, 45 minutes)

The technology behind DERIVE and the TI-92, computer algebra, creates one of
the biggest challenges to math education. On the one hand these systems make
wonderful tools in traditional teaching. On the other hand they will help to
change the contents of what we teach. With regard to the first issue, we will
present a concept that explains how to incorporate these tools in a traditional
math class. The approach, called the "Scaffolding Method" (based on
Buchberger's "White-Box/Black-Box Principle"), is demonstrated with examples
from elementary algebra and calculus. Several variants of the method are
described and their impact for teaching and learning is discussed.
