FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT Special Session on Applications of Computational Topology and Algebra to Engineering and Mathematics Larry Lambe Stockholm University This is a call for papers in the area of computational topology and algebra as applied to solving problems in the following areas: o Solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations through the use of differential Groebner bases and/or symmetry methods. This includes, for example 1. Differential Groebner basis techniques in general. 2. Resolutions of operators using differential Groebner basis techniques. 3. Calculation of symmetries of systems of differential equations. 4. Combined use of symmetries and differential Groebner basis techniques. o The use of algebraic techniques for applied mathematics and numerical computations. This includes, for example 1. The use of symbolic computation in the finite element and finite difference methods. 2. The use of symbolic computation to precondition problems for more efficient numeric solution. 3. The use of Lie algebra techniques in applied mathematics. 4. Symbolic computation in mathematical physics (R-matrices, quantum Yang-Baxter equation, physical systems, etc). 5. Algebraic methods in the theory of interpolation. o Applications of topology and algebra to problems in engineering and science. This includes, for example 1. Homology techniques in computer-aided design. 2. Applications of computational topology to robotics. 3. Applications of computational topology and algebra to networks and communication systems. 4. Applications of computational topology to biology chemistry and other sciences.
