Statistics General Information

Program of Study. The graduate program in Statistics is administered by the Statistics group, which consists of nine faculty within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The Statistics program offers both the M.A. and Ph.D. degree. The coursework for both degree programs integrates statistical theory, applications and computing. Students planning graduate studies at the University of New Mexico will find a congenial department in which to work and a faculty of international stature. The research interests of the Statistics group include core areas of Applied and Theoretical Statistics, and Probability. Ph.D. students dissertations may be in any of these broad areas.

Research Facilities. There is an excellent collection of books and journals in the Centennial Science and Engineering Library. The department's computing facilities include multiple computers and workstations (a mix of Sparcstations, IBM RS 6000 and SGI workstations, many X-terminals, and approximately 20-30 personal computers) on a common network. The department also administers a separate fifty-seat instructional computing laboratory. The University has considerable computing power available to department students and personnel in the form of numerous IBM RS 6000's, X-terminals, and PCs. UNM also manages the Maui High-Performance Computing Center, which is developing leading-edge scalable processing technologies, and the Albuquerque Resource Center (ARC) which presents tutorials and workshops on high-performance computing and maintains an in-house visualization and parallel computing laboratory.

Financial Aid. Teaching assistantships are available to qualified students and these carry tuition waivers and stipends which start at $9,700 for nine months. A number of students are also supported by ARC. There is also the possibility of additional compensation from summer employment in the department or in one of the national laboratories. For information on additional sources of financial support, applicants should call the Financial Aid Office (505)277-2041 or the Office of Graduate Studies (505)277-2711 as early as possible.

Location. Albuquerque is famous for its favorable climate and is in a setting rich in traditions and cultures. The metropolitan Albuquerque area has a population of over half a million. The University campus lies a mile above sea level on a plateau overlooking the Rio Grande, west of the Sandia Mountains, which rise to an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet. Housing and other costs are at moderate levels. New Mexico is rich in natural beauty.

The Department. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers complete graduate programs in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics. The department has 37 full-time faculty and approximately 90 graduate students, 35 of which are pursuing advanced degrees in Statistics.

Application. Admission to graduate study is based on merit as judged by previous academic work, letters of recommendation, and GRE scores. The general GRE is required of all applicants. It is recommended that all applicants for assistantships also take the mathematics GRE. Applications for graduate study serve as applications for teaching assistantships and should be made by February 1. Applications received after February 1 may be considered if unfilled positions exist. Women and minority students are especially encouraged to apply.
