Seminary talk by Scott David Kelly: Ten Toy Problems from Mechanics
Event Description:
Ten Toy Problems from Mechanics
The scholarly study of mechanical systems is thousands of years old, yet
even the simplest of systems can behave in surprising ways. Elementary
problems that isolate surprising principles of dynamics illuminate
building blocks for the complexity we observe in the physical world,
particularly when these problems admit simple mathematical models. From
rising and falling chains to tumbling blocks to spinning bowls of soup,
this talk will survey several such ``toy problems’’ and their analysis,
placing special emphasis on the role of geometry at the heart of
mechanics.
