We encourage you to look at or web site, http://www.calpoly.edu/~jshapiro/REU.html to get more information. You will find at this web site descriptions of sample projects to work on, though there will be opportunity to work on anything you and a faculty member decide on during the summer. You will also find information about the way the program will be run and the environment in San Luis Obispo.
Applications should be made through the web site, or contact me, Jonathan Shapiro,
at jshapiro@calpoly.edu for more information.
We
would like people to apply by March 15.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Computational Number Theory and Combinatorics
Clemson University
Clemson South Carolina
May 25 - July 21, 2002
Eight students who have a solid background in mathematics and some knowledge of computation will be selected to participate in an eight week research experience in computational number theory and combinatorics to be held at Clemson University from May 25 through July 21, 2002. The eight students selected will be offered up to $350 in travel support, a dorm room to be shared with another participant in the REU, up to $600 for meals and a stipend of $2,660.
HOW YO APPLY.
All undergraduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents and are interested in computation and combinatorics and/or number theory are invited to apply. If this is you, please visit the web page listed at the bottom of this page for application instructions and an application form. Application deadline is March 15 (March 19 for electronic submissions).
PROGRAM DETAILS
Participants will be introduced to various tools, techniques and problems from computational number theory and combinatorics. The participants will be divided into teams of two. Each team will then pick a problem on which to focus for the remainder of the REU. The goal of the program will be to help students attain a higher level of independence in mathematical research by giving them the opportunity to take part in a significant and interesting research project. For the first two weeks of the program participants will meet daily with the PI and co-PI. As time progresses, these meetings will become less frequent in order to allow the students to reach an increased level of independence. Participants will be strongly encouraged to pursue the publishing of their results in a suitable mathematical journal. Students will also be encouraged to attend the SouthEast Regional Meeting On Numbers (SERMON) in the spring of the following year and present their work there. For a list of possible problems, please visit our web page. (See the bottom of the page for the address).
SPECIAL LECTURE SERIES
As a complement to working on their research, students will be required to attend a weekly lecture series. These lectures will be given by faculty who have been recognized as leaders in the various fields related to the students' research problems and who have demonstrated the ability to clearly communicate mathematical ideas to audiences of varying levels.
