Funds will be categorized into three pools:
  1. Funds will be set aside for conference travel or registration. Each student wishing to apply for travel funds to present their project at a conference will be required to complete a Departmental Request for Travel. The Undergraduate Committee (UGC) will evaluate the proposals.

Travel grants will be made until the funds for the year are exhausted. Should there appear to be excessive funds toward the end of the year, the funds can be rolled over into the second category of materials fund. Funding will be a maximum of $150.00 per student times 5 students for a total of $750.00 in travel funds.

  2. Students may apply for $25.00 for materials to aid in their research or to complete their research presentation. The UGC will evaluate each request on an individual basis and will award small materials grants until the funding is exhausted for the year. Funding will be a maximum of $25.00 per materials for 5 students for a total of $125.00 in materials funds.

  3. Funds will be set aside to purchase special Math honor cords for Departmental Honors Graduates for commencement. Honors cords cost $8.95 (rounded to $9.00) each and Honors will purchase up to 5 cords per year for a total of $45.00. This will help defray the high cost of graduation for our Honor Students.

Students will be strongly encouraged by their faculty advisor to participate in local undergraduate research presentation opportunities. Students will also be encouraged to participate in undergraduate research presentation opportunities at universities within reasonable traveling distance for UNM students.

The honor program will assist in preparing students for graduate studies at UNM and other institutions worldwide. The experiences earned by students through their honors research will also provide additional resume materials proving that the students are capable of graduate level research.

It is the goal of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to not only offer an exceptional learning experience in our classrooms, but to also encourage students to pursue graduate studies. We believe that the implementation of a Departmental Honors program will not only help students prepare for research at the graduate level, but will also teach them how to apply for research funding.

Obtaining Research funding is an essential skill for graduate students, and writing proposals for an RFT and other support will be invaluable for students. Our goal with the Departmental Honors is to encourage the best of our students to gain knowledge that will make them successful graduate students.
