General Information
Program of Study
The Department
of Mathematics and Statistics offers programs that lead to a M.S. or Ph.D. degree
with options in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Applied Statistics.
Students planning graduate studies at the University of New Mexico will find a
congenial department and a faculty of international stature.
The research interests
of the department encompass core areas of analysis, computational mathematics,
discrete mathematics, geometry and topology, mathematical biology, mathematical
physics, nonlinear systems, and probability and statistics.
Research Facilities
Centennial
Science and Engineering Library: this facility holds an extensive
collection of book and journals.
Dane Smith Hall: a fifty-seat instructional computing laboratory.
Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center
(AHPCC): Available to all UNM students, this center provides access
to numerous high performance, multi-processor computers. AHPCC also provides a
visualization and parallel computing lab with tutorials and workshops.
In-house Computing Resources: The Mathematics & Statistics Department
maintains an in-house alpha cluster (9 nodes) and a variety of server and desktop
computers. We also maintain our own computing lab which currently has 12 workstations.
UNM Computing Resources: There are 8 computer pod/classrooms across campus
maintained by the Information Technology Services (ITS) department of the University.
Financial Aid
Teaching assistantships
that carry tuition waivers and stipends are available to qualified students. A
number of students are also supported by AHPCC
and NSF research grants. There is also the possibility of additional compensation
from summer employment in the department or in one of the national laboratories.
For information on additional sources of financial support, applicants should
contact the Financial Aid Office (277-2041)
or the Office of Graduate Studies (277-2711) as early as possible.
Location
Albuquerque
is famous for its favorable climate and is in a setting rich in multicultural traditions. The metropolitan Albuquerque area has a population of over half
a million. The University campus lies a mile above sea level on a plateau overlooking
the Rio Grande, west of the Sandia Mountains that rise to an elevation of nearly
11,000 feet. Housing and other costs are at moderate levels. New
Mexico is rich in culture and natural beauty.
The Department
The University
of New Mexico has over 25,000 students. There are currently 39 full-time faculty,
as well as several research visitors in the Department. In addition to 90 mathematics
and statistics graduate students on
campus, more than 20 graduate students are full-time employees at the Sandia
National Laboratories and Los Alamos National
Laboratory and other local firms.
Application
Admission to graduate
study is based on merit as judged by previous academic work, letters of recommendation,
and GRE scores. The general GRE is required of all applicants. It is recommended
that all applicants for assistantships also take the mathematics GRE. Applications
for graduate study also serve as applications for teaching assistantships and
should be made by February 1.
Applications received after February 1 may be considered
if unfilled positions exist. Women and minority students are especially encouraged
to apply.
