Why give?
While the University of New Mexico has been very supportive of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, invariably there are projects and programs that the Department would like to implement that are beyond the current resources of the University.A quick look at our webpage will give you a sense of the number and breath of things that happen year round. Financial support from outside the University will allow us to extend and enliven the experience that both the students and faculty have while in the academic environment. Since Mathematics and Statistics are closely intertwined with many other disciplines at the University, an enrichment of the Mathematics program has a far broader impact than just our department.
What would we accomplish?
:: Scholarships:
We want to increase the number of scholarships available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students in the Department have a unique opportunity to work with faculty who are often in collaboration with such internationally known institutions as Los Alamos National Labs, Sandia National Lab, NASA and JPL to name a few.
:: Multimedia Teaching:
We are working on providing an interactive, multimedia teaching environment where students can more dramatically see how math principles work. This is particularly important to some of the upper division classes where esoteric concepts lend themselves to better understanding when presented in a dynamic way. Additional outside resources will allow us to broaden this approach to reach more students and give the faculty additional tools for teaching.
:: Interdepartmental Communication:
We are reviewing our physical layout to incorporate more opportunities for students and faculty to comfortably exchange ideas. It is often said that students learn as much from each other as they do in the formal classroom. We want a learning environment that is both comfortable and nurturing. Classrooms and labs would enable these opportunities.
:: Technology:
Mathematics and computers are now interdependent siblings. While we have several computer labs and a sophisticated cluster of servers, this technology is both quickly changing and very expensive. Additional outside funds will allow us to keep abreast of technology and give both students and faculty access to state of the art hardware/software.
:: Community Outreach:
UNM has partnered with Albuquerque Public Schools and Gallup-McKinley County Schools to improve student achivement in mathematics. La Meta (Math Educators Targeting Achievement) is directed by Kristin Umland, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics & Statistics at UNM. This program aims to improve the content knowledge and mathemeatical knowledge for teaching of New Mexico middle school mathematics teachers.
