Instructor: Alexandru Buium
Required text: Undergraduate Algebra by Lang.
Term: Fall 2019
Time and place: MWF 10-10:50, DSH 136
Office hours: MWF 11-11:50
3 credits
Material covered: Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4
Grading policy: There will be one
midterm exam (the date will be annluced in class) and a final exam
(which will be comprehensive).
The exams will consist of problems similar to the homework problems
or to the problems solved in class.
Homework will be assigned in class
every Friday.
There will be a quiz each Friday in which you are asked
to solve one problem which is similar to the homework problems or to the problems solved in class.
The grade for the class (g) is computed
by the formula g=(m+f+q)/3, where
m is the grade for the midterm, f is the grade for the final, and q
is the average of the grades for the quizzes.
You will receive no grade for the homework: the
homework has the role of practice for the quizzes.
The correspondence between
your grades expressed in percentages and your grades expressed in letters (A,...F)
is defined by a curve that will be discussed in class.
Note. If you encounter difficulties
with your homework please do not hesitate to ask me questions about the homework during the office hours; if you are not available during my office hours please contact me by e-mail and we can make a special appointment. It is important that you attempt to do your homework BEFORE we discuss it during the office hours. Also, note that the material in the lectures and the material in the text are not identical: the material in the lectures is not entirely contained (and does not entirely contain) the material in the text. It is important that you attend the lectures and ALSO independently read the text.
Qualified students with disabilities needing appropriate academic adjustments
should contact me as soon as possible to ensure your needs
are met in a timely manner. Handouts are available
in alternative accessible formats upon request.

violence made to a faculty member, TA, or GA must be reported
to the Title IX Coordinator at the Office of Equal Opportunity
